Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland found themselves with 48 points each in the FIFA Best Men’s Player prize, as voted by a global panel of national team coaches and captains, selected journalists, and online fans.

The tiebreaker, however, favored Messi, thanks to the votes from national team captains. The breakdown revealed an equal tally of 48 points for both players. The tiebreaker considered whoever received more first-place or “5-point” scores from the votes of national team captains. Messi secured this category with a score of 107 to Haaland’s 64.

Neither player attended the awards ceremony at Hammersmith Apollo theater in west London, and Kylian Mbappé, the third finalist, also skipped the event.

Messi’s remarkable year included a move from Paris Saint-Germain to Inter Miami, leading the David Beckham-owned team to a Leagues Cup title and earning his eighth Ballon d’Or award.

World Cup champion Aitana Bonmatí was named FIFA’s Best Women’s Soccer Player, adding to her achievements after winning the Ballon d’Or and UEFA award. The 25-year-old Spain playmaker led Spain to World Cup and Barcelona to the Champions League title.

Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City manager, received the Best Men’s Coach award for leading City to a treble of titles: Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup. England coach Sarina Wiegman won the women’s prize.

The men’s award considered achievements from after the World Cup through Aug. 20, excluding the tournament itself. Messi’s contributions in the United States significantly influenced the voting, as he brought star power to the MLS and led Inter Miami to its first-ever trophy, winning the Leagues Cup.

Ederson of Brazil and Manchester City and Mary Earps of England and Manchester United received the Best Goalkeeper awards.
